Talker familiarity and the accommodation of talker variability

چکیده
A fundamental problem in speech perception is how (or whether) listeners accommodate variability the way talkers produce speech. One view of cope with this that talker differences are normalized – a mapping between talker-specific characteristics and phonetic categories computed such recognized context talker’s vocal characteristics. Consistent view, process more slowly when changes randomly than remains constant. An alternative based on auditory exemplars memory clustered around linguistic allow talker-independent perception. become efficient at processing after voice identification training. We asked whether efficiency would increase familiarity by testing extremely familiar (family members), newly (based laboratory training), unfamiliar talkers. also reduce need for normalization. As predicted, (word recognition noise) increased (unfamiliar < trained-on family). However, we observed constant cost even pairs family members. discuss normalization exemplar theories might account these results, constraints results impose theoretical accounts constancy.

The effects of talker variability on phonetic accommodation
This paper compares spontaneous phonetic accommodation in high and low variability talker conditions. If multi-talker processing is a kind of increased cognitive load, we predict an increase in imitation in the low variability contexts. Our results suggest that, indeed, phonetic accommodation is greater in low variability contexts, but that this higher level of accommodation is moderated as per...
متن کاملTransfer of Talker-Familiarity Effects
Familiarity with a talker facilitates perception for both heard speech (where speech from a familiar talker is better identified in noise) and for visual speech (where familiarity with a talker’s face assists visual speech recognition). Recently, it has even been shown that the talker familiarity effect can be produced cross modally, i.e., experience in speech-reading a talker facilitates perfo...
متن کاملAcoustic differences, listener expectations, and the perceptual accommodation of talker variability.
Two talkers' productions of the same phoneme may be quite different acoustically, whereas their productions of different speech sounds may be virtually identical. Despite this lack of invariance in the relationship between the speech signal and linguistic categories, listeners experience phonetic constancy across a wide range of talkers, speaking styles, linguistic contexts, and acoustic enviro...
متن کاملThe effect of talker familiarity on stream segregation
This study contrasts different forms of familiarity with a talker’s voice, to better explore how these types of familiarity might influence a listener’s ability to understand that voice in the context of noise. Listeners were asked to shadow a target voice while a second voice spoke fluently in the background. Listeners differed in their familiarity with the target voice: one group was familiar...
متن کاملEffects of talker variability on speechreading.
The effects of talker variability on visual speech perception were tested by having subjects speechread sentences from either single-talker or mixed-talker sentence lists. Results revealed that changes in talker from trial to trial decreased speechreading performance. To help determine whether this decrement was due to talker change--and not a change in superficial characteristics of the stimul...
